Consequence
If you don’t respect this, you’re more likely to have your e-mail rejected or spammed.
And as a reminder, DMARC applies if SPF and DKIM fail.
If the verification system malfunctions, you have less chance of being rejected by mistake if you respect both.
And in any case, it increases your deliverability rate.
Why not comply?
We can ask ourselves why certain key players don’t respect the protocols correctly:
- incompetence: it would be a bit too simple
- early: standards are not old: 2011 (DKIM), SPF (2014), DMARC (2015), BIMI (2019).
- legacy: more likely. Many servers still ignore this. Gmail has long respected this for incoming messages, but not outgoing.
- delivery: incorrect settings, old systems that intercept and forward mail, or technical failures can block legitimate mail. As a result, this can have an impact on these providers indicators. However, this will no longer be the case. Microsoft and Google are now forcing compliance with these protocols… but with no obligation to reject DMARC… for the time being. And even without this, there’s every chance that you’ll end up in spam if you don’t comply.
What to do if my provider doesn’t comply
Apply pressure by changing! And if you can’t, use them on a subdomain or dedicated domain name. That way you can have a weak policy for them and a strong one for the rest.
